According to various reports, Blizzard’s Diablo 3 is one of the most successful games of all time when it comes to sales. In fact, it’s number ten on the list with over 30 MILLION copies sold. 30 million. It’s just behind New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS, Wii Sports Resort, Tetris, Mario Kart Wii and Super Smash Bros. What an accomplishment.

This success is due in no small part to Blizzard’s constant support of a game that was initially released in 2012. They’ve unleashed one massive expansion, ported the game to XBOX One and PS4, there are hints of an additional expansion in 2016, and they’ve continued to release patches that have altered massive sections of the game. Is this the way the Diablo legacy should continue, or do we seek something new?

Blizzard have a hidden Diablo 3 expansion on the horizon, according to various sources. We obviously have no idea what to expect from this supposed release (other than the fact that it’ll have incredible cinematics). But is Diablo 3 that perfect that almost 4 years later players don’t desire a new installment in the famed franchise?

This is a formula that Blizzard have followed and employed for years. We’ve obviously seen it happen so many times with the World of Warcraft franchise, and even Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty has received expansion upon expansion since 2010 (and we’re still loving it). Say what you like about Blizzard, but they sure know how to create a seemingly timeless product.

Now, the idea of Diablo 4 is obviously an intriguing one. We’d have new characters, a new narrative, updated graphics, new areas, tons more loot, and so on and so on. However, I’m not so sure that Diablo 3’s fanbase are pushing for a fourth installment. Blizzard’s expansions are generally fantastic and can keep you busy for months, even years! Besides, they’re cheaper for us. Therefore, is Diablo 4 something we really need?

I mean, Diablo 3 has its areas that we’d liked to see fixed, for sure:

  • Simplified equipment mechanics aren’t very satisfying after a while.
  • What’s with the lack of spell synergies, man?
  • We could do with some improved narrative elements, particularly with regards to dialogue. This is an expansive universe here, we can get a more complicated plot-line!
  • Imbalanced monster mechanics still abound and enrage.
  • Can we have some music to rival that of Diablo 2? Many thanks.
  • We want future Diablo expansions to be much darker in terms of atmosphere.
  • Constant Internet Connection. Get rid of it.

But what is the fanbase calling for? Are you lot completely content with the idea of receiving expansion after expansion until, years later, Blizzard decide to release Diablo 4.

Most of the game reviewers who looked back Diablo III after Reaper of Souls agreed that Patch 2.4 introduced a lot of game content’s worth being on DLC. We’ll hope that trend continues if not, expect Diablo IV in a couple more years.
